What Is The 7+ Assessment?

Many leading independent schools assess children during Year 2 for entry into Year 3. Known as the 7+ assessment, this process may include English, Mathematics, Reasoning, interviews and classroom observation activities. For many families, 7+ provides an opportunity to join their preferred school at an earlier stage, often avoiding the increased competition and uncertainty associated with later entry points such as 11+ and 13+.

Success requires more than academic knowledge alone.
Children must be confident readers, capable problem-solvers, effective communicators and independent thinkers.
That is exactly what the Scholars Programme has been designed to develop.

Why Families Choose 7+

Every family is different, but many parents share a common aspiration: to provide their child with the strongest possible educational foundation.
A successful 7+ application can provide:

βœ“ Earlier entry into a preferred independent school
βœ“ Access to excellent educational opportunities from an earlier age
βœ“ A smoother academic pathway
βœ“ Reduced pressure at later assessment points
βœ“ Greater confidence and preparedness for future challenges
Β
At Free Readers, we believe strong preparation begins with strong foundations.

Developing Young Scholars

At Free Readers, we believe strong academic outcomes are built upon strong foundations.

By combining strong foundations with intellectual curiosity, confident communication and a genuine love of learning, our Scholars Programme develops confident readers, capable mathematicians, effective communicators and independent thinkers.

Our goal is simple:
To develop young scholars who are prepared not only for assessment day, but for the exciting academic journey that follows.

The Four Pillars of the Scholars Programme

The Four Pillars
i.

Number Mastery

Building confidence and fluency in arithmetic, fractions, measures, geometry, reasoning and mathematical thinking. Children understand concepts and learn to solve problems, explain their thinking and approach unfamiliar challenges with confidence.

ii.

English Language Fundamentals

Developing reading fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, writing and communication skills. Strong readers become strong learners.

iii.

Reasoning

Strengthening verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, logical thinking and problem-solving ability through engaging and carefully structured activities.

iv.

Scholar Development

Developing confidence, communication, resilience, curiosity and independent thinking through purposeful activities that prepare children for both assessment and life beyond the classroom.

The Scholar Reading Journal

Read Widely. Think Deeply. Stay Curious.

Reading sits at the heart of the Scholars Programme. In August or September, every Scholar participates in our Ten Books Before December Challenge through the Free Readers Scholar Reading Journal.
Children are encouraged to:

Discover ambitious vocabulary
Reflect on characters and themes
Ask thoughtful questions
Think like authors
Develop curiosity and independent thinking
Build the habits of lifelong readers

As children progress, they move through the Scholar Pathway:

Developing the Scholar Mindset

Academic success is built upon more than knowledge alone. At Free Readers, we help children develop the confidence, habits and ways of thinking that support success both inside and outside the classroom.
Through purposeful challenge, thoughtful discussion and guided reflection, Scholars learn to
approach learning with curiosity, resilience and independence.

Scholar Mindset

Confident Communication

Building confidence in discussion, conversation and self-expression.

Independent Thinking

Encouraging children to explain ideas, justify opinions and approach challenge positively.

Positive Learning Habits

Developing concentration, resilience, careful listening and attention to detail.

Assessment Readiness

Helping children approach assessments calmly, confidently and independently.

Is My Child Ready?

The Scholars Programme is suitable for children who:

βœ“ Will sit 7+ assessments within the next 6–18 months.
βœ“ Enjoy learning and benefit from challenge.
βœ“ Need stronger foundations in English or Maths.
βœ“ Would benefit from greater confidence and independence.
βœ“ Aspire to academically selective school pathways.

Our Philosophy

At Free Readers, we believe education should challenge, inspire and empower.
We help children build strong foundations, think independently and approach learning withΒ confidence and curiosity.
Our goal is not simply to prepare children for an assessment, but to develop young scholars
who are ready to embrace the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
Because success at 7+ is not the destination. It is the beginning of an exciting educational
journey.

What Does a Scholar Look Like?

A Scholar is a child who approaches learning with confidence, curiosity and independence.
As children progress through the Scholars Programme, they become:

Confident readers who enjoy books and think deeply about what they read
Stronger mathematicians who can explain their thinking and solve problems independently
Effective communicators who express their ideas clearly and confidently
Curious learners who ask questions and seek understanding
Resilient thinkers who are willing to tackle challenge and learn from mistakes
Independent learners who take increasing responsibility for their own progress
Children who approach assessments calmly, confidently and positively
