What Is The 4+ Assessment?
Some independent schools assess children for entry into Reception, usually when they are not quite four years old. Often referred to as the 4+ assessment, the process helps schools identify children who are likely to thrive within their environment and benefit from the opportunities they provide.
These assessments are typically informal, observation-based and designed to be age- appropriate. Children may take part in a combination of play activities, conversations, group tasks, storytelling and simple literacy or numeracy activities. Every school has its own admissions process, but the qualities being assessed are remarkably similar.
The good news is that these qualities can be nurtured and developed through positive experiences, purposeful play and thoughtful preparation. That is where the Young Scholars Programme can help.
Supporting Parents Through the 4+ Journey
The 4+ admissions process can feel unfamiliar, particularly if this is your first experience of independent school applications. Parents often have questions about what schools are looking for, how assessments work and how best to support their child at home. At Free Readers, we believe preparation is most effective when parents feel informed and confident too.
Alongside supporting your child, we provide guidance, feedback and practical advice to help you understand the process, celebrate progress and make informed decisions throughout your child journey. Because successful preparation is not simply about assessment day. It is about helping children and parents approach the experience with confidence.
What Schools Are Looking For
Every school has its own admissions process, but the qualities being assessed are remarkably similar. Schools are not simply looking for children who can recognise letters, count numbers or complete tasks correctly. They are looking for children who demonstrate the skills and behaviours that will help them thrive in a classroom environment.
Children may be observed individually, in small groups or as part of a larger group activity.
Throughout the assessment process, schools are often looking for:
Developing Young Scholars
The early years play an important role in shaping a child confidence, attitudes and approach
to learning. Our Young Scholars Programme has been carefully designed to nurture the skills, behaviors
and characteristics that help children thrive both in school and beyond. Through purposeful play, meaningful interactions and age-appropriate challenge, we help children develop these qualities in a way that feels natural, enjoyable and engaging.Â
Learning Through Purposeful Play
Young children learn best when they are engaged, curious and actively involved in the learning process.
That is why the Young Scholars Programme combines structured learning with purposeful
play, carefully designed activities and meaningful interactions. Through stories, games, puzzles, role play, discussion and practical activities, children learn to listen carefully, communicate confidently, solve simple problems independently and interact positively with adults and peers. Along the way, they develop resilience, fine motorcontrol, curiosity and imagination.
Every activity has a purpose. Every interaction is an opportunity to learn. Most importantly, children remain children. We believe preparation should nurture curiosity and confidence, allowing children to enjoy
learning while developing the foundations for future success. We believe preparation should nurture curiosity and confidence, allowing children to enjoy learning while developing the foundations for future success.

Childhood First
At Free Readers, we believe childhood should be celebrated, not rushed.
The early years are a time for exploration, discovery, imagination and growth. They are also the years in which confidence, independence and attitudes towards learning begin to take shape. Our Young Scholars Programme has been designed to nurture these qualities while helping children develop the foundations needed for a successful start at school. Through encouragement, purposeful learning and positive experiences, we help children grow in confidence, develop curiosity and build a genuine love of learning. Because confident, curious children often become confident, successful learners.
Building Strong Early Foundations
As children develop through the Young Scholars Programme, they develop confidence, curiosity and school readiness. They are also introduced to age-appropriate literacy and
numeracy concepts that support future learning and, where appropriate, 4+ assessments. Through stories, discussion, games and practical activities, children begin to develop early reading skills, phonological awareness, vocabulary, number sense and mathematical thinking. They also strengthen listening, attention and memory skills while developing the fine motor control needed for writing.
Many Young Scholars also participate in our specialist Read & Write programme, where they begin their journey as Sound Heroes and develop strong foundations in reading, spelling and writing through the highly effective Phono-Graphix approach. Together, these programmes help children build the confidence, communication skills and early learning foundations that support long-term academic success.
